When people think of the window manufacturing industry, they often picture factories, machinery, production lines, and what has traditionally been considered a male-dominated environment. What they don’t always see are the countless women who have dedicated decades of their lives to helping this industry grow, evolve, and succeed.
I am proud to have spent 27 years in the window manufacturing industry. My sister-in-law has dedicated 32 years to the trade, and two of our other ladies have each given more than 20 years of service. Together, we represent nearly a century of experience, commitment, knowledge, and determination.
Over those years, we have witnessed enormous changes. We have adapted to new technologies, changing customer expectations, economic challenges, and industry developments. Through it all, we have remained committed to our customers, our colleagues, and our businesses.
What makes women in this industry so remarkable is our resilience.
Many of us have balanced demanding careers with raising families, caring for loved ones, and managing the countless responsibilities that life presents. We have learned how to solve problems under pressure, support our teams during difficult times, and keep things moving when challenges arise. Strength is not just about physical ability. It is about perseverance, adaptability, dedication, and the determination to keep going when things become difficult.
Women bring invaluable skills to our industry. Attention to detail, communication, organisation, customer care, teamwork, and problem-solving are qualities that help businesses thrive. Whether working in manufacturing, operations, administration, sales, customer service, or leadership roles, women continue to play a vital part in the success of window manufacturing companies across the country.
What makes our industry particularly special is the number of family-run businesses at its heart. Many of our customers are husband-and-wife teams, just like us. Being part of a family business creates a unique bond and understanding between people who share not only a workplace but a life together.
Working alongside a spouse can be challenging. Running a business doesn’t stop at the end of the working day. Discussions continue over dinner, plans are made in the evenings, and concerns are often shared long after the office lights have been turned off. There are times when work and home life overlap, and balancing both can be difficult.
Yet it is also incredibly rewarding.
There is something special about building a business together, sharing goals, supporting one another through challenges, and celebrating achievements as a team. Family businesses are built on trust, commitment, loyalty, and hard work. They often become an extension of the family itself, with employees, customers, and suppliers becoming part of that journey.
As a family-run business, we understand the passion and dedication it takes to make that work. We understand the sacrifices that are made and the pride that comes from creating something together. That shared experience has helped us build strong and lasting relationships with many of our customers who face the same challenges and enjoy the same rewards.
Over the years, attitudes within manufacturing have continued to evolve, and rightly so. More women are joining the industry, bringing fresh perspectives, new ideas, and valuable expertise. The industry is stronger because of this diversity, and the future is brighter for the next generation of women who choose to build their careers in manufacturing.
For any young woman considering a career in the window industry, our message is simple: believe in yourself. There is a place for you here. Your skills, ideas, determination, and work ethic can help shape the future of this industry.
